Tamil DS content is clear, respectful, and human. We write for Tamil Nadu citizens first — in Tamil — then in English. Never the reverse.

Short sentences. No jargon. A Class 8 student should understand our UI copy.

Use formal Tamil (நீங்கள்) not colloquial (நீ) in all product UI.

Error messages tell the user what to do next, not just what went wrong.

Inclusive

Avoid gender assumptions. Use gender-neutral Tamil forms where possible.

Writing for the UI

Microcopy (buttons, labels, alerts) needs to be actionable. Tell the user exactly what will happen when they interact with a component.

Use concise action verbs

Start buttons and links with strong, unambiguous verbs.

Avoid conversational phrasing

Do not use unnecessary words like 'Click here to' or 'Please'.

'தயவுசெய்து' போன்ற தேவையற்ற வார்த்தைகளைத் தவிர்க்கவும்.

Provide actionable error solutions

பயனுள்ள பிழைத் தீர்வுகளை வழங்கவும்

Explain exactly what went wrong and how the user can fix it.

என்ன தவறு நடந்தது என்பதையும், அதை எவ்வாறு சரிசெய்வது என்பதையும் விளக்கவும்.

Avoid dead-end generic errors

Do not blame the user or use system codes without explanation.

Bilingual Guidelines

In TamilDS, we lead with Tamil (`Tamil labels first`) and provide English as a fallback (`English fallback below` or alongside). When a UI element must be bilingual, the pattern is: Tamil / English — note the slash with spaces.

Avoid mixing languages on the same line for long sentences, as it breaks reading flow.

Numbers and dates

Use Arabic numerals (1 2 3) not Tamil numerals (௧ ௨ ௩) in data UI — screen readers handle Arabic numerals better across all locales.
Date format: DD/MM/YYYY for Tamil Nadu context. Avoid MM/DD/YYYY (US format).
Currency: ₹ symbol, not “Rs.” or “INR” in Tamil UI.
Phone numbers: +91 prefix, space after country code — +91 98765 43210.

Standardized Civic Vocabulary

Consistent terminology builds trust. Always use these standardized translations across all state applications. Translate all UI abbreviations (e.g. N/A to பொருந்தாது).
